Laterite
Ta Phrom Wat Cambodia
Laterite is the background structure of blocks of clay filled with straw or other material that is found behind the carved sandstone facade of most of the Wat structures. Up close it looks a bit like Swiss Cheese - the organic material burned out during baking left holes. Laterite is also much lighter than sandstone and was made on-site.
