About the Artist:
Lee Sky is an expert wood turner. Lee's woodturning career begun in 2000 when he took a class at his local Woodcraft store and soon after joined the Gold Coast Woodturners.  Lee has been a mentor to this organization since 2003 and began as a woodworking instructor in 2004 and has served as vice-president and president. Lee is also a current member of Palm Beach County Woodturners, South Florida Woodturners Guild, South Florida Woodworkers Guild, the American Association of Woodturners, and the Our Art-by-the-Sea Association.

Most of Lee's work is sold privately, in galleries or at local art and craft shows.  He has displayed works at the TATEM Gallery in Dania Beach, Studio 19 Fine Art in Ft. Lauderdale, the American Association of Woodturners Gallery in Minneapolis, Fairchild Tropical Gardens, Flamingo Gardens, the Weston Art Show, the Orlando Museum of Art, and the Broward County Main Library.

About the Artist:

Gail Smith is absolutely "The First Lady of Piano". A diversity of styles and variety of sounds are her trademark in concerts. She is one of foremost composer/arrangers in the field of sacred piano music, and a highly respected music educator. Gail received her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from Florida Atlantic University.

She was National Music Chairman of the National League of American Pen Women and a former president of the Broward County Branch. Gail is a member of the MTNA, National Guild of Piano Teachers and Federation of Music Clubs. She has taught piano students from the age of 3 to age 99! Her blind student, Ivan, was seen on national television on "That's incredible" several years ago. Gail is the pianist of the Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. She has given concerts in churches and workshops on improvisation throughout the USA, Germany, Sweden and Japan.

About the Artist:

John Bowen attended the School of Fine And Industrial Arts in Newark, New Jersey. His early experience includes eight years of drawing for the U.S. Air Force. Many of his drawings are displayed at the U.S.A.F. Academy in Colorado. John is a Signature Member of the Goldcoast Watercolor Society and the Florida Watercolor Society. His works have been showcased in national publications and displayed in public venues, museums and galleries.

Create your own card using multimedia materials. Minimal fee may be involved to cover material costs. Romi will show photographs of some of her latest projects and demonstrate the use of quick and easy metallic foils.
Speaker’s Biography:
Romana “Romi” Tarlamis has been working in the area of decorative finishing since 1997. Her projects include creating Contemporary and Olde World finishes, Large-Scale Paintings, Trompe-l’oeil, Exotic Faux skins and antiquing. She is mostly a self taught artist, combining relevant training from the Vero School of Faux Finishing and Textureline (a Canadian manufacturer of architectural products). Most of her work has been private commissions in residential and commercial locations around Florida and in Canada.
Romi also enjoys attending life drawing classes, En plain aire painting and working with other artists.
Note: This will be the final meeting of Our Art-by-the-Sea for the 2010-2011 Season. Meetings and Presentations will resume in September. We welcome your ideas for speakers and topics.

Speaker: Sandy Hynds Organization: Our Art-by-the-Sea Price: Free Contact: Fran Scheffler, Program Chair (954-772-1684), or Marion Elizondo, Secretary (954-785-7408) Speaker’s Biography: Sandy Hynds is a Midwest / Florida artist whose work is primarily concerned with light, color and pattern. Working in watercolor, both transparent and opaque, as well as oils, she approaches subject matter impressionistically and abstractly. Her imagery ranges from landscapes to urbanscapes to still life. Her interest in painting began as a grade school student and has never waned. She attended special art programs in Pittsburgh, obtaining a scholarship to the Carnegie-Mellon High School art program. After receiving her BA in Sociology from Boston University, she attended art classes at the University of Illinois and attended workshops with renown artists and at the Scottsdale Artist School and International Workshop in Belgium. Ms. Hynds received a Fine Arts degree from Parkland College. In her words: “I look at my environment constantly and think about how that scene would be if I can capture its essence and therefore make it part of me. I enjoy the process of painting as much as the product. It is an inner need and a personal expression.” Sandy maintains a studio in her home. Her work is in commercial and private collections. She has participated in numerous juried, and invitational group and one person shows.

Speaker's Biography:

After working in corporate sales for 30 years, Tammy began her vocation in art, with a passion for watercolors. Initially a self taught artist, she follows in her father's footsteps, an accomplished acrylic painter.  Tammy's art reflects her environment with its incredible range of rich and sun drenched colors. Tammy's watercolor paintings are also inspired by nature and her travels to U.S. National Parks and abroad.  She often paints using photos from her travels and will have a camera close by to capture her next subject.

Color intrigues her, and creating interesting combinations of color on YUPO, a synthetic plastic paper, is a challenge and a delight, and will be the main subject of her presentation.

Tammy is an active member of the Gold Coast Watercolor Society, Florida Watercolor Society, Broward Art Guild, the National League of American Pen Women, and Our Art-by-the-Sea.  Her works are frequently exhibited locally.

NOTE: The presentation will follow a short business meeting.

If you would like to try the technique yourself, Tammy suggests that you bring the following materials:

1-2 pieces of YUPO large sheet (Utrecht has them in stock - $4.00 per sheet average).

Foam core board, same size as YUPO sheet.

Tammy will have all the other materials for those who would like to try their hand with the webbing this year.

Speaker's Biography:    Barbara Quackenbush is a professional artist who spends her summers in Harrisonburg, Virginia and winters in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. She received a Bachelor's of Fine Art from Richmond Professional Institute, now named Virginia Commonwealth University.  Upon graduation, she pursued her art studies in the Nation's Capital, at George Washington University and the Corcoran Gallery of Art.

Lee will be doing a woodturning demonstration on making jewelry from locally grown wood, palm tree seeds & epoxy. He will be bringing a guest speaker from Virginia, Tom Illowecki, who makes this jewelry also.  Lee will show how to mount and cut the palm seeds on a wood lathe and we will discuss arranging wood to make patterns in bracelets, pendants, earrings, necklaces & more.

 Speaker's Biography:

Lee Sky is an expert wood turner. Woodturning is the spinning of a wood blank on a lathe while shaping it with a variety of chisels. The craft itself is over 2,000 years old. The artist is able to create items ranging from utilitarian salad bowls and candle holders, bud vases and ink pens, to extraordinary works of Fine Art.

Lee has over 8 years of woodturning experience and is a member of the Gold Coast Woodturners in Broward County, the Palm Beach County Woodturners and the American Association of Woodturners.  Lee is a member of Our Art-by-the-Sea Association.
